This tool uses a server — and here is why
Unlike most tools on this site, Word to PDF cannot run in your browser. Rendering a Word document faithfully means resolving styles, fonts, tables, headers, footers and page breaks exactly as Word would — that is what a full office suite does, and no browser has one built in.
So the conversion runs on our server using LibreOffice in headless mode, the same engine millions of Linux desktops use to open Word files. Your document is uploaded over an encrypted connection, converted, sent back, and then deleted right away. Nothing is stored, kept or read.
The alternative — a browser-side "converter" that just changes the file extension or dumps the raw text — produces a file that looks nothing like your document. We would rather be honest about the upload than ship that.
Fonts and layout
The server carries the Liberation and DejaVu font families, which are metric-compatible substitutes for Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New. Documents using those standard fonts keep their exact line breaks and page count. A document built around an unusual font that only exists on your own computer will be rendered with the closest available substitute, so check the result if precise pagination matters.

Does it keep my formatting?
Yes, for the great majority of documents. Standard fonts, tables, images, headers and footers all carry over. Very unusual fonts are substituted with the closest match.
Is my document stored on the server?
No. It is converted and deleted immediately — it is written to a temporary folder that is erased as soon as your PDF is sent back.
Why is the first conversion slow?
The conversion server sleeps when it is idle to keep the site free to run. The first request wakes it up, which takes 30–60 seconds. Conversions after that are quick.
What's the file size limit?
25 MB per file.
