Why forms reject uploads
Application portals check uploads mechanically, and a rejection is almost always one of four things: the pixel dimensions are outside the stated range, the file is over the KB limit, the format is wrong (JPG is usually required), or the photo and the signature were swapped between fields. Getting all four right the first time is the entire point of doing this before you open the form.
Getting a usable signature image
Sign in dark ink on plain white paper, photograph or scan it straight on in even light, then crop tightly to the signature itself. Cropping first matters: a signature floating in a large white field will be scaled down to almost nothing when the image is resized to the required dimensions.
Meeting a KB limit without ruining the image
Set the pixel dimensions first, then compress. A file that is already at its target dimensions needs far less compression to reach a size limit, so it stays readable. Compressing a full-resolution photo down to 20 KB, by contrast, destroys it.

It varies by form. Many ask for roughly 200×230 pixels for the photograph and 140×60 for the signature, with file sizes between 20 KB and 50 KB — but always follow the numbers printed on the form you are filling in.
My signature file is too big. What now?
Crop tightly around the signature first, then set the required pixel size, then compress. In that order the file gets small without becoming unreadable.
