Circular crop for profile pictures
Switching to circle mode crops to a round shape with a transparent background, saved as a PNG so the transparency survives. This is what you want for a profile picture that will be displayed inside a circle — cropping the subject properly instead of letting the platform cut it wherever it likes.
One thing to know: transparency needs PNG. If you save a circular crop as JPG, the transparent corners fill with solid colour, because JPEG has no transparency at all.
Crop before you resize
When a form asks for a specific shape — a square photo, a 3:4 portrait — crop to that shape first and resize afterwards. Doing it the other way round means resizing a picture you are about to cut up, which just wastes the resolution you had.
Straightening a document photo
Cropping tightly around a photographed page removes distracting background and makes the page easier to read, and the resulting file is meaningfully smaller because you have thrown away the desk around it.
