Why it's saved as PNG
A JPG can't have transparent areas, so a circular crop saved as JPG would end up as a circle on a white square. The round crop is saved as PNG, which keeps the corners transparent — the picture sits cleanly on a dark theme, a coloured slide or a website header.
Where round images help
WhatsApp, Instagram, LinkedIn and most sites show profile pictures as circles anyway, but uploading an image that is already round lets you decide exactly what's inside the circle instead of leaving it to the site's automatic crop. Round images also look neat in presentations, email signatures and team pages.
Getting a good round crop
Leave a little room around the face. Profile pictures are usually shown small, and a circle cut tight to the chin and hairline looks cramped at that size. Put the eyes slightly above the middle of the circle — that is where people look first.
Start from the biggest, sharpest copy of the photo you have. The crop keeps the pixels inside the circle as they are, so a crop from a sharp original stays sharp, while a crop from a small, already-compressed image can't get its detail back. For a logo, crop from the original file rather than from a screenshot of it.
