Choosing the right format
Three formats cover almost everything, and picking correctly matters more than any quality setting.
JPG is for photographs. It discards detail the eye is poor at noticing and produces small files. It has no transparency, and every re-save loses a little more — so edit from the original rather than repeatedly re-saving a JPG.
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it right for logos, screenshots, line art and anything with sharp edges or text. Used for a camera photo it produces files several times larger than JPG with no visible benefit — the single most common format mistake.
WEBP is the modern option, typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, with transparency support as well. Every current browser handles it. The one place to avoid it is a file that must open in older desktop software, which may not recognise it.
The upload-form case
Many application portals accept JPG only, and reject PNG or WEBP outright with an unhelpful error. Converting to JPG here takes a moment and removes the problem. If there is also a file-size limit, use the quality slider in the same pass rather than compressing separately afterwards.
What conversion cannot undo
Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore the detail JPG threw away — it just stores the already-degraded image losslessly, in a bigger file. Format conversion moves an image between containers; it cannot recover quality that is gone.
Questions people ask
Which format is smallest?
WEBP, usually 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality. JPG is next. PNG is largest for photographs because it is lossless.
Does converting to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG stores the image losslessly from that point on, but detail already lost to JPG compression cannot come back.
Can I convert HEIC from my iPhone?
Yes. HEIC photos are decoded and can be saved as JPG, PNG or WEBP.
