How the photos are sized
In a horizontal layout every photo is scaled to the same height, so the row lines up; in a vertical layout they share the same width. A grid gives every photo an equal square cell. The gaps and any spare space are white, and the result is saved as a high-quality JPG.
Both sides of a document

Tips for a clean result
Pick the layout that suits the shapes. Side by side works best for photos of similar height, one above the other for photos of similar width, and the grid when you have many. A wide landscape next to a tall portrait in a row makes a long, thin strip, because every photo in a row gets the same height.
Set the gap to 0 for a seamless join, or leave 10–20 pixels to keep the photos visibly separate. Fix the order with the arrows before merging: the first image goes on the left, or at the top.
