Why photos are so large in the first place
A modern phone camera produces images of 12 megapixels or more — several megabytes each. Almost nothing you upload actually needs that. A profile picture is displayed at a few hundred pixels; a document photo needs to be readable, not printable at poster size. Compression removes detail your viewer was never going to see.
Format matters as much as quality
JPEG discards fine detail to save space and is the right choice for photographs. PNG is lossless — it never throws information away, which makes it excellent for screenshots, logos and line art, and a poor choice for camera photos, where it can produce files several times larger than JPEG at no visible benefit. WEBP typically beats both at the same visual quality and is supported by every current browser.
If a PNG photograph is refusing to get small enough, the real fix is usually converting it to JPG rather than compressing it harder — the format conversion tools here do that in the same place.
