How to use Crop PDF

The tablet-reading case
This is the most common reason people crop a PDF. An A4 page has generous margins designed for print; on a 10-inch screen those margins eat a third of the display, leaving the text too small to read comfortably. Trimming 8–12% from each side typically makes a document genuinely readable on a tablet without zooming and panning on every page.
How the crop is stored
PDF has a built-in concept for this: the crop box, a rectangle that tells a reader which part of the page to display. Setting it is lossless — no content is re-rendered, no text is rasterised, nothing is thrown away. Text stays selectable and images stay exactly as sharp as they were.
One consequence worth knowing: because the content is hidden rather than deleted, the file does not get smaller, and some professional tools can reveal the trimmed area again. For reading and printing this is exactly what you want. If you need the margins genuinely gone, that is a different operation than cropping.
One setting for the whole document
The same trim is applied to every page, which is right for a document with a consistent layout — the usual case. It also means a document with mixed page sizes will crop unevenly, since the trim is a percentage of each page's own size.
Questions people ask
Does cropping reduce quality?
No. Only the crop box changes; the page content is untouched, so text stays selectable and images stay sharp.
Will the file get smaller?
Generally no. Cropping hides content rather than deleting it, so the bytes are still there.
Can I crop just one page?
The trim applies to the whole document. To crop a single page, extract it with Split PDF first, crop that, then merge it back.
