This requires the password
To be completely clear: this tool does not crack, guess or bypass anything. It uses qpdf to decrypt a document with the password you supply, and without the right password it simply fails. It exists for the ordinary case where a bank statement, salary slip or utility bill arrives password-protected and you would rather keep an unlocked copy in your own files.
Removing protection from a document you do not have the right to open is not something this tool can do, and doing so would breach the terms of service.
Why this one uses a server
PDF encryption has to be undone by software that implements the standard properly. This runs qpdf on our server: the file is uploaded over an encrypted connection, decrypted, returned, and deleted immediately. The password you type is used for that single operation and is never stored or logged.
Two kinds of PDF password
A PDF can carry an open password, which stops the document from being viewed at all, and a permissions password, which allows viewing but restricts printing or copying. Supplying the password you have removes the encryption either way, producing a clean file with no restrictions.
Questions people ask
Can this open a PDF if I don't know the password?
No. The correct password is required. Without it the tool cannot decrypt the file, by design.
Is my password stored anywhere?
No. It is used for the single decryption and is never written down, logged or kept.
Is it legal to remove a PDF password?
For a document you own or are authorised to access, yes — this is the normal case of unlocking your own bank statement. Removing protection from someone else's document is not something you should use this for.
