How to use PDF to Word

Be realistic about what this can do
This is the conversion that most often disappoints people, so it is worth being straight about it. A PDF does not contain paragraphs, headings or tables — it contains instructions for placing glyphs at coordinates on a page. Converting to Word means reconstructing a document structure that was thrown away when the PDF was made.
For a clean, text-based PDF — a letter, a report, an article — reconstruction works well and you get a genuinely editable document. For a heavily designed layout with multiple columns, floating boxes and tight typography, expect the result to need tidying up. And a PDF that is really a scan (a photograph of a page) contains no text at all to recover, so it converts to a document containing a picture.
The conversion runs on our server using LibreOffice's Writer PDF importer. Your file is deleted immediately after it is converted.
PDF to Excel is deliberately not offered
You will notice there is no PDF to Excel tool here. LibreOffice has no working PDF-to-spreadsheet importer, and there is no honest way to guess which marks on a page were meant to be cells. Rather than ship a converter that silently produces a broken file, we left it out.
Questions people ask
Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?
Close, for simple text documents. Complex multi-column layouts will need manual tidying — a PDF has no structure to recover, so the layout is reconstructed rather than read.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to editable text?
No. A scan is an image of a page with no text data in it. Recovering text from a scan needs OCR, which this tool does not do.
Is my file kept on the server?
No. It is converted and deleted straight away.
Why is PDF to Excel missing?
Because no reliable converter exists for it. A PDF has no concept of cells, and a tool that guessed would produce a spreadsheet you could not trust.
